Gpx files?

Hi all I have booked my flight to walk my first Camino needless to say I’m super excited. I will be walking the primitivo arriving in Oviedo 21/05/24. Is there somewhere I can download the gpx files for each stage? I have a Suunto watch that I want to use for navigation as I’m hoping to leave my smartphone at home. I do plan on taking an old Nokia to call home and book accommodation. Looking forward to any advice and I’m sure I’ll have many more questions before my time comes

The Spanish mapping agency, CNIG, has tracks in .kml format here: https://centrodedescargas.cnig.es/CentroDescargas/loadCamSan.do. I find it easier to search in the page for the camino name to get to the specific camino route I am looking for.

I used the CNIG tracks and the tracks in apps (Wise Pilgrim and Buen Camino) for the Primitivo. Wise Pilgrim has commented elsewhere warning that the CNIG tracks are not kept up to date and, while useful for a general view of where the Camino goes, shouldn't be relied on for the fine details of the route.

Wise Pilgrim has turned comments I have made around in a couple of days or less. Clearly not something that the publishers of Brierley can do with a printed guide.

Even with good track information, when you are walking, you still need to pay attention to the waymarking. It doesn't pay to walk mindlessly following a GPS track as your only reference. There are not many times where I have been confused where the current way-marking has indicated a different path to the GPS track I have been using, but I am always going to make sure that I understand why that might be before keeping going.

You can also look at wikiloc and search for the Camino route you desire. You are also able to filter searches based on hiking or cycling as well. The users of the tracks also give feedback so you can get an idea of how good the track is.
It is possible to download the tracks in multiple formats.

I’ll probably only use the gps to check my position if I feel like I’ve gone wrong somewhere along the way

You won't need this on the CF but with the proper settings the Wikiloc app can audibly signal you that you have walked off the track. You don't have to constantly look at your phone and it can prevent you from having to double back. A drawback though is the draw on your battery.

I’m actually considering leaving my phone at home and having the stages preloaded on to my watch

Actually I did have a problem with Wikiloc beeping causing me to walk off track. I was walking the last stage of the Aragonese and I was looking forward to see the romanesque church in Eunate. I was following a Wikiloc track and I had the app set to notify me if I walked off track but also to give a beep just before a waypoint in the recorded track. It turned out though that the waypoints entered weren't for important things like stream crossings or fuentes but for the locations of the photos the app can show. After countless beeps to show me photos of things I could see in real life I got tired of hearing them. Instead of changing settings I took the (bad) shortcut of turning the speaker volume all the way down. I missed the switch in the camino from the road to a trail and I kept following the road. I was saved by my curiosity of knowing where I was and I looked at the phone. I saw my position and the track's position about 500 meters apart.

I was also very skeptical about this feature. However, on the Lana, I found it quite helpful a few times, and generally not invasive at all. I muted it when walking through towns, where the route really doesn"t matter. I am a convert now.

My earlier comment was reflecting on the symphony that such an application might generate if it beeped every time I deviated from its vision of the route that I should be following

If you search Wikiloc.com you will find stage:maps for nearly all casinos. You can download for free.

You can search for and view tracks on Wikiloc for free but to download them you have to have an account. You can register for free; if you pay for a premium membership you get extra benefits.

I downloaded the app and paid for a membership it's probably one of the best value hiking apps out there in my opinion €9.99 per year!
