Just had a look at the properties of methane. Less dense than air and therefore another possible lifting gas. On routes like the Primitivo where there is frequent access to fabada asturiana and sidra natural it might be a useful alternative...

there are all kinds of inflatable shapes available, why stop at boring old balloons? Fill up your travel pillow with helium, or your kid's paddle pool! How about one of those adult-toy life-size dolls? Take a load off your back, and be the life of the party, too! Just don't try to check Debbi Doozy into the albergue... and don't cut her loose. She might trigger a rapture.
