Leon - 2nd Tier Sights

Time of past OR future Camino
First one in 1977 by train. Many since then by foot. Next one ASAP.
In mid September I expect to resume my slow walk west from Leon, a wonderful place, and I'm budgeting a day at leisure there before setting off.... How to spend it?!? I've been thru Leon several times over the years. I could happily spend my leisure day re-visiting the Cathedral and its museum, the Basilica of San Isidoro, the Museum of Leon. Love 'em all! ... But there must surely be some 2nd tier gems begging to be explored! Suggestions invited!

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Hey there, Rappahannock! How wonderful to be resuming your slow walk west in September! I have an unorthodox suggestion for touring. Rest....a lot during the day, and at 9 pm, get your walking shoes on, and enjoy the abundantly vibrant culture of Spain during the evening hours! It's just so beautiful there to see families out eating and laughing, children with their loved ones, and all that amazing food. The streets around the cathedral are so alive. I just love them. I also love tracking down and photographing all the statues I can!

Wishing you the very best of health!

I agree with you have seen it in most Spanish cities the families enjoying the evening and children playing while couples enjoying a cafe or a drink.

The Museum of Modern Art (MUSAC) is definitely worth a visit. You have no doubt visited Casa Botines, but the tour there is very good. Happy planning and Buen Camino!

The Museo Casa Serra Pambley is an extraordinary little nobleman's house at the corner of ........, just by the Cathedral. Serra was an educational and agricultural reformer of the mid-Victorian period (and the owner of one of the first indoor plumbing in Leon) and the furniture of the house gives you a perspective of how life was actually lived in mid-19c Spain. The Museo de Leon gives you a great picture of the 2,000+ history of the city. When I visited they had a good display of Roman mosaics and an exhibition of the travelling schools of the 2d Republic, which toured the poorer areas without elementary schools.

Probably you'll know that Don Quixote the novel is a complex work with a lot of different tales inside. One of them is "la historia del cautivo" and starts in Chapter XXXIX: the main character says then: "En un lugar de las montañas de Leon tuvo principio mi linaje....".

It's a beautifull bizantine story, a good gate to go in Cervantes world, and to read a free afternoon.

Ideal pocket guides for during & after your Camino. Each weighs only 1.4 oz (40g)!
A peek into the estimable book by Gitlitz and Davidson has offered several possibilies -- such as the imposing Church of San Marcelo, which I have walked past many times but never entered.

Worth seeing is the small museum / interpretation centre at Palacio del Conde Luna on Calle Regidores, it's about the Kingdom of Leon; also a visit to the beautiful Plaza del Grano, and the Cathedral has free organ concerts once weekly in the evenings (on Wedesdays if i recall ) about Sept/Oct timeframe.

The Conde Luna is an excellent suggestion, and practically next door to where I expect to stay. Thank you.

And the last night of my 2019 slow-walk installment I indulged a bit, roomed at the Hospedaria Monastica Pax, and enjoyed a wistful, lingering last meal at the Aurea Taberna, there on the Plaza del Grano.... And that is where my 2021 installment will begin!

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
On the left of your photo of the Plaza del Grano there is a fountain. You may think that the supporters of the column are the ugliest-looking children you've ever seen. That is until you see the statues of the children in the fountain in the Parque de San Francisco, possibly by the same sculptor.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
