Thanks to Design4Life for reminding me of Logroño such a lovely place! Interesting churchs, built beside a major river, the Ebro known so well to all students of Classical History, but also as a place of good food, good drink, good entertainment. The municipal albergue is situated next to both the police station a not uncommon phenomena along the Camino - historically those pilgrims were often a rowdy lot, and very close by to the Casino. Now, those who have studied somewhat on different aspects at different times along the Camino know that often pilgrims were not such righteous fellows, a casino was probably a more refined experience than other opportunities offered, opportunities which I will ignore. Many required the Compostela document as a sort of "Get Out of Jail Free" card due to some crime for which walking several months was a better alternative than starving to death in the local hoosegow. So, modern Logroño does reflect many aspects of Camino life and history. For all those early risers, up and running down the Camino at 0530 do pick up your heads before leaving town in order to see the largest and most amazing Mata Moros on the CF. Disregarding for a moment the rather graphic details it is porthole into Spanish history, Spanish iconography, and the impotance of Saint James on the peninsula. Such a nice experience there.
