My wife & I will be flying to Madrid on 23rd April & are then planning to catch a bus or train to Pamplona where we start our Camino. We walk together to Logrono, when my wife returns to Madrid & I continue hopefully to Santiago.

A couple of questions:
  • Which do you recommend - bus or train - and should we book seats in advance
  • For the first section we would like to have 1 suitcase transported between hotels. Is it necessary to pre- book the transport /do I need to get some labels to identify & address my luggage/which company is easiest to use.

The 9th edition the Lightfoot Guide will let you complete the journey your way.
Transport luggage-passengers.
From airports to SJPP
Luggage from SJPP to Roncevalles
Train is more comfortable. Renfe train to Pamplona leaves from Puerta de Atocha.

Bus is cheaper and runs more frequently. Some buses call at Madrid Airport T4. PLM Autocares and ALSA buses to Pamplona leave from Intercambiador de Avenida de America.

Booking ahead might mean a travel deal. Booking ahead means you lose if your plane arrives too late to continue on your planned journey. Not booking ahead means you might not get a seat on the bus or train you wanted ... worst case is you wait for the next. Line-ups for tickets can be long (while automated ticket machines go unused). You don't need to book ahead, particularly if you plan to use the bus ... unless you are traveling during a holiday. (When is Easter week this year?)
