March-April 2017
Hi all,

My husband and I are planning to start in SJPP in mid-March of 2017. I have read in some guides that many Albergues do not open until after Easter which is in mid-April. Can any pilgrims who have hiked in March let us know if we will have trouble finding lodging? Should we postpone until after Easter?

Much appreciated, Sara

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Many will be closed, but don't postpone. It is a great time to walk with the "right" number of pilgrims. Stay in the larger places.

Thanks for your quick reply! I have seen several "winter pilgrim Albergues" lists. Is it safe to assume that "winter" is pre-Easter and those lists would be a good guide for March?

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
I walked in March 2 years ago. It was wonderful!
Yes, we had to be careful early on as many Albergues did not open until April but the guide books / information and the hospitaleros in previous towns had accurate advice.
buen camino

Easter is early this year, the last weekend in March, so you will only be in the winter opening season for a week or so.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Last year I started from Leon on 15 March and can assure you that I found no problem to find opened albergues. I must say that for stops I followed the Brierley guide. If in doubt ask for advice at the albergue you are sleeping. This year I am starting on 7 March from Pamplona and I'm sure I will find the necessary albergues opened. Good luck

Hi Sara, Municipal albergues are open all year around. And they are generally managed by very nice people. You'll be fine. Buen Camino :) Caesar

This http://www.aprinca.com/alberguesinvierno/ is the list for this year, but the hospitaleros that maintain it are likely to do so also next year. You can have a look how things are March this year and that will give you a good idea which ones are open next year at the same time.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

Thanks! Do the other albergues typically open in April or is Easter the better gauge?

Easter is traditionally the start of the pilgrims season as many Spaniards walk, at least a part of the Camino, around this time. Also because of Easter being a (school) holiday in Europe. Buen Camino, SY
