Hi Everyone -
I'm Billy, I'm a 32-year-old attorney and writer living in Washington, DC. My mother is from Spain, and she and her best friend in the US just completed the Camino, starting from Sarria. They are ladies of a "certain age", as they say, and my mother's friend is recovering from breast cancer surgery and chemotherapy. So I'm very proud of them.
My best friend in the UK and I have been talking about doing the Camino together from the first time we were introduced in a pub in London about six years ago. He is also a writer, and fortunately speaks and reads Spanish fluently. When we first started hanging out we both realised that it might be fun to do this trip together, given how much we both love Spain, and write about our experiences and very different perceptions - because he is an atheist/agnostic, and I am a devout Catholic.
So I called him early this morning in England, and talked about my Mom and her friend, and we decided that we need to finally stop talking about it and actually do this trip. Because our respective careers are kind of hectic and in flux right now, we're shooting for doing the Camino next summer, either June or July of 2007. So we're planning way in advance, but this is good because it will give us plenty of time to prepare and get everything right. Given that he is English and I am English on my Dad's side, and we have about a week available to us, we are probably going to do the Camino Ingles from Ferrol. If we get to the end of it without killing each other, we will probably try from Roncesvalles another time.
Well, that's me in a nutshell. Look forward to learning more on here as I go along this virtual camino!
Best wishes,
B.
