Porterage along the route

Greetings,
We are five "youthful" women in our "near 60's" who will be walking the Camino in September in celebration of our age and spirit. We have all overcome serious health issues and the battles of life and now celebrate who we are as women. My question: How do we arrange for "porterage" of a suitcase or two each day along the route? We plan to start in Astorga or possibly Rabanal and plan on using backpacks to carry most of our "needs" and then combine whatever else might be necessary into one or two small suitcases for the five of us. We also plan on posting some things to Santiago. Any information would be greatly appreciated. And look for the five of us in September....we'll be wearing red t-shirts and calling ourselves "wild Wimmin."

...and ship it to Santiago for storage. You pick it up once in Santiago. Service offered by Casa Ivar (we use DHL for transportation).
The best tip is to get rid of the non-essential items before you start walking (mobile phones, iPods, heavy cameras, hairdryers, too many spare clothes, books, kitchen sink etc) - instead imagine that you're going on a series of day walks with some accomodation choices each day as well as food and other shops along the way (sometimes you'll have to stock up with some food but you can walk happily on liquid alone followed by an evening meal)

Greetings to the Wild Wimmin :D

Camino tradition is to carry all of one's essential belongings for the duration of the pilgrimage. It is definitely more of an experience to do it this way, but if you can't, a friend of mine said there are companies and groups that can arrange daily luggage support from point to point. I don't know of any specific ones, though, so you may need to do some research.

If you will be staying in small hotels you may be able to arrange porterage with the concierge/front desk on a daily basis. If you will be staying at hostals or albergues, I don't think they offer the service :)

Either way, whether you carry your load or have support, I hope you and your friends are able to make the journey :)

Buen camino,

PW

In 2005, I met a small group of elderly German peregrinos who were able to make arrangements at each stop to have their packs sent on, through a combination of hotelkeepers, bar-owners, hospitaleroes and taxidrivers. They paid between 2E and 5E a pack and quite seemed to enjoy the adventure of arranging it in each place.

SEPTEMBER ON THE CAMINO

Hello Youthful Women -
I will be on the trail at the same time you are. I will start about 7 Sept in Ronscesvalles and possibly reach Santiago on 10 Oct which is my 60th birthday. Seemed like I needed to do something special.... Hope to see you along the trail. Bill (tall blond guy)
