Rookie mistake. Is my gear ruined or what?

Greetings everyone!

I think we all feel a bit disoriented when we get behind the wheel of a new car. Nothing's quite where we expect it to be. It's like when they bring out a new version of Word and all the icons have been tidied away somewhere.

You can always rely on the kettle. And those cakes you bought on special offer.

But what about a new washing machine? So many options!

Here's the confession. I wanted to wash dark colours, including my waterproof coat that I bought in SJPDP, my gilet and my base layers. They all went in on a low temperature. Then, wondering how I was going to dry them on a cold rainy day, my indoor 'airer' drunk again and quite unable to stand up, I alighted upon a button which said "DRY". Lucky me, I thought. This machine must also be a dryer...

Do I even need to say it? That was yesterday. The clothes took more punishment in the drum than they did on the mountain last weekend. HERE'S MY QUESTION: do you think all that heat and the solvents will have ruined the finer qualities of my hiking clothes?

Did I do it on purpose? There's a sale at the mountain gear shop any day now.

Your clothes may look bad but I think that if they fit they will still work fine EXCEPT for your rainwear which probably has some type of membrane in it or water repellent applied. Test it out by having someone give you a long spraying with a garden hose. This should be done on a very cold day. That doesn't help with the test but it should help remind you to not ever mistreat you clothes again.

Ah the dreaded washer dryer, as with everything in life there is an upside, now you can buy a new wardrobe of walking gear. I consider you very lucky to have this opportunity, me I'm still wearing my old gear.

Silly person,next time put all yer clothes on and go to a carwash,so even if they shrink they will shrink to yer body shape,and people say we Irish are thick

If your rainfear is Gortex, It's supposed to go through a hot dryer periodically. It does something to tighten up the water-repellent qualities. So no problem, if That's the case.

If, not, well I personally like the idea of going through the car wash with all your clothes on. I may give that one a try myself sometime .

Raingear is overrated. It only keeps you from being less wet. The above comments are all spot on but I wouldn't stress over it too much.

Bala is correct. there are some rain gears that their repellent membrane can be re-activated by a dryer
why dont you call the company and ask ? (unless it is rubberized and gummy glue now)
the other suggestions of hose- or standing in a shower! to test are good too but the best tests is on the road, in rain when you are sweating too (may be take a back up plan )

My Frogg Togg raingear has never let me down! The best test was walking most of a day on the meseta in torrential rain with high winds blowing it sideways. I was still completely dry when I checked into the albergue at 3pm!

Put your clothes on your Barbie doll. Do they fit her? If the answer is "yes," go and buy more rainwear for yourself, and congratulations on upgrading Barbie's wardrobe.
Then the two of you can go together to the car wash. Cat optional.

BUT you must make sure there's no detergent left over in the dispenser drawer before you wash Gortex (or similar) as it can clog up the "pores" and your rain gear will give you as much protection as a used Kleenex - not a problem with a new washing machine of course

The best thing to use on Gortex is petrol. Plus a match. Light the match.

Inbetween mountain hikes. I'm still using the base layer and gilet, and the socks, but I bought a lovely knew waterproof coat and winter wool hat, so maybe I did it subconsciously for an excuse to shop.

There are some great threads on this site. This is one of them. Thanks for the heads up on washing gortex. Each time I put mine on I am reminded that it needs a wash. So far on the Camino I haven't needed it (SJPDP to Leon) so I'm assuming the fragrance is still tucked inside.
By the way... did the cat enjoy the carwash!

I have just bought another high quality raingear jacket with excellant specs for both water repellance and breathability..
As I was selling a matching rainjacket but in a wrong size to a buyer from my neighbourhood, he says;

- "By the way all nice tecnical fabrics of any kind will only take about 10 machine washings, it is a known fact within the industry ! It will only last two to four years before specs start to fail, if you do ! "

What !!

Turns out his wife is a technical fabric specialist, testing prospective fabrics for a greater clothes brand all over the world.
So I am going to do what he suggests;
- Wash in hand with sponge and mild detergent...
