Sleeping pad.....

StefGe

New Member
Time of past OR future Camino
From July 26, 2014 from Burgos to Santiago
July/August 2015 planned the Camino Portugues.
Do I need to take a sleeping pad during my end of July until mid August Camino?

Or is it unnecessary weight on the back?

Thanks for you sharing the experience.

Stefanie

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Welcome to the forum Stefanie. I would not bring it, no need. I saw more of these left at albergues and at the side of the trail that you would not believe. Save the space and weight.
Buen Camino.

Hmmmmm I'm German you know..... We like planning...... But I suppose as well it is too much..... How is it in summertime, since I'll be going now during peak time?

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
Borrow one that someone else has carried. There will dozens of unused mats each night, and pilgrims are very helpful to other pilgrims.

I walked the Camino last August-September. I saw lots of people with sleeping pads. I only saw them being used once in Ponferrada. The public aubergue was so full that people slept outside. I would leave the pad at home unless you are planning on sleeping outside.
Buen Camino

Thanks all. I removed it..... ;-) and if I want to sleep outside I might find one :)

Hello Stephanie,
It's nice to speak to you and welcome to the Forum.

To help answer your question and help you make a decision, unless you plan to sleep outside, which will very likely be be unnecessary, I don't think you will need a sleeping mat. Even the most basic of albergues will have something for you to lay upon.

The thinnest bed I experienced was at Granon where sleeping mats were the only solace offered, and it was wonderful.

Buen Camino my friend.

I've looked at most of the comments and I've decided not to take a sleeping bag.. I've ordered a Vietnamese BLUE 100% PURE SILK SINGLE SLEEPING BAG LINER TRAVEL SHEET SLEEPSACK. Weighing in at only 4 oz.. For a May trip it should suffice..well...it's going to have to..lol..buen camino..

Greetings Stephanie :)

You can probably always borrow one, that's true, so you don't need to bring one. I prefer not to leave things to chance and always travel with one, but not a pad. I prefer a lightweight Therm-a-Rest inflatable mattress, the lightest one possible. For a walk like this a short version is fine as opposed to a full-length model. If my knees are on the ground, that's fine for one or two nights.

Sweet dreams! :)
