Let me preface this by saying please understand I am not picking on anybody, I fully understand that mistakes happen and how. Been there, done that.

I have been astonished to see so many lost and found reports over the last two weeks. And not just little things : major items, important/expensive items.

Off the top of my head that list includes a bank card, purse, poles, a drone, a GoPro, an Altus poncho and a rain jacket. Let alone smaller items like hats etc.

I, too, have left my poles behind once. Had to backtrack one and a half kilometres to collect them. Considering that they are normally always in my hands goodness only knows how I managed that.

So the purpose of this is just to remind us all: make sure you secure your gear properly. Securely insert or even better clip your purse into to your belt or pack, double safety pin the socks when they are hung to dry. Remember to check that you have zipped shut everything that should be zipped shut. If your poles, jacket, hat or poncho are going on the outside of your pack, don't just use one strap to secure them, use two.

And as many have said over the years:
after a break, secure everything properly, take a couple of steps, stop, turn around and look back. Nothing left behind?

I’ve got a habit that I’ve learnt from doing the Camino is that when ever I leave a place or a seat I alway look back and make sure I don’t leave nothing behind.

To be fair, the drone went off on a Camino of its own choosing and wasn’t “lost” as in “left behind”. But yes, everyone should practice the simple task of looking back whenever you leave a place.

Indeed, but that answer hadn't been received at the time that I posted this. It was simply reported as "Lost Mark III drone in Ponte de Lima."

We all need to bring some valuables, or things that are difficult to replace. At a minimum cash and a passport.

And those items should be in a money belt of some sort attached to your body at all times except for showering, at which time the belt should go into the shower with you in a waterproof bag.

Of cause you need to take care of your things but all this talk about safety precautions causes also some irritation with me. What I like about a camino is that at the base of how many things work on a camino lies trust in our fellow man. Be it for instance the drinks you can take at some places and leave the money in a tin can; load your smartphone unattended ( what many people, me included, do and so on. Of cause you are running risks but for me the price I pay when I would constantly have to think how to avoid risks is just too high. And I feel that every time I am consciously taken safetymeasures I am enforcing the feeling that other people cannot be trusted. The measures I take have more to do with the fear that I lose things or leave them behind.

I disagree! I don’t constantly have to think about measures to protect my valuables. I have three things that are valuable (phone and passport, and to a lesser extent I guess’ my wallet). I just keep them within my visibility at all times! I don’t find it difficult at all. And it doesn’t mean a judgment on my fellow person. In fact I wince when I see folks leave valuables in open view and take no offence when they secure them even when I am the only person on the room!

But it’s about ‘moments’ and always taking a care! Stayed in a hostel the other night (USA not Spain). Got back to dorm late. Was keen to charge phone as had earth flight next day. Only 1 person in dorm, a young lady as pleasant and friendly, and I am sure as honest as you can get. But I still took my stuff into the shower. The risk was tiny. She did the same. It was Friday night, had my stuff been taken my early morning flight wouldn’t be happening, let alone my late evening flight back to Europe.

Bottom line is to be more risks you take, the more you put yourself at risk!

I'm so sorry sinned to this, left my wool hat and gloves at the alb in Oviedo this morning. So if someone find a small plastic bag with pink hat and black gloves, they are mine.
