Transportation from Madrid airport to SJPP

We are getting into Madrid at 11:40 am in July and are hoping to get to SJPP that night. Is there a bus station right in the airport??

Also, do we have to change buses in Pampolona?

Bus service from Madrid to Pamplona bus station is provided by ALSA.

Buses to Pamplona start from Avenida de America. Some buses but not all stop at T4 Madrid Barajas Airport. There is usually a transfer required at either Soria or Zaragosa.

It is necessary to purchase a separate ticket for the leg from Pamplona to SJPdP.

Bus service from Pamplona bus station to SJPdP is provided by Conda.

Conda is owned by ALSA so the schedule shows on the international tab (SJPdP is in France) ALSA website.

2002 Madrid Airport

The airport in Madrid is called Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD). There are 4 terminals. T1, T2, and T3 are connected while T4 is connected via shuttle. Terminal 4S is connected to Terminal 4 by Automatic People Mover (APM) and has a shuttle stop.

2011 Madrid Airport to bus station Avenida de America

Intercambiador de Avenida de America (Madrid) is co-located with the Metro. Take line 8 from Barajas airport T1-T2-T3 or T4 to Colombia; and, line 9 to Avenida de America.

2058 Pamplona to Saint Jean Pied de Port

ALSA provides ~seasonal~ bus service from Pamplona to Saint Jean Pied de Port through its subsidiary Conda. The bus stop in Saint Jean Pied de Port is located near the junction of Route d'Uhart and Route d'Arneguy. The Conda site advises that you purchase the ticket from Pamplona to Saint Jean Pied de Port separately from any other bus ticket.

At time of writing the bus from Pamplona to SJPdP runs daily 1000 13 June to 31 August 2014, 1430 1 June to 30 Sept 2014, and 1730 17 March to 30 September 2014. The bus returns from SJPdP to Pamplona. The schedule is usually updated only a month in advance. Check the schedule before travel in case buses are added or deleted. Use the ALSA international tab and click the 'query without date' button.

If the bus is not operating your options are to continue to SJPdP via Bayonne or hire a taxi from Pamplona or Roncesvalles.

If you arrive into MAD at 11:40a, the earliest you could get to Pamplona by bus is 7:45pm, which will be after the bus has left for SJPP. You certainly could get a taxi that late, though, from outside the bus station. The taxi will probably cost around 80-100 euros.

Bus service from Madrid to Pamplona is with Alsa, but on a Conda bus. There is a bus that leaves at 1:15pm from MAD Terminal 4. It's the same bus that leaves the Ave de America station at 1:00p, so no need to hop the metro to get to a different station.

Another option is to contact Corazon Puro and see if they will do a pick-up in Pamplona that late. They are a pension about 30 kms from Pamplona, on the way to SJPP, and they will drop you in SJPP the next morning by 9:00am - early enough to start your walk after a quick visit to the Pilgrim's Office. Total cost for pick-up in Pamplona, dinner, breakfast, bed, and ride to SJPP is 43 euros per person. http://corazonpuro.es/

If you really want to get there early "break the bank", buy a RT ticket - Madrid/Pamplona (no I didn't mistype; it's cheaper than a one-way!; pick the return as far out as possible), and follow nreyn12's corazonpuro advice. You'll be having a cool beer before supper that night and start rested in SJPdP in the morning.
I arbitrarily chose the 12:55 flight on 16 July (don't check your luggage!) and it was about 100 Euros.

Wow, thanks for the great info!

We are going to need to bike a leg of the trip. Any suggestions with regard to the flattest portions?? Also, a good bike company that can deliver and pick up bikes....

You can get from the airport to the bus/train station on the Madrid Subway system. We were able to go to our hotel, the Prado, Train Stations, and the US Embassy via the subway system. Cheaper than a cab. You can check it out on line.
