Can anyone tell me where I can but Galician vegetable seeds in Santiago, I am especially looking for the giant cabbage that I saw growing en route, as well as Padron peppers and any others local vegetables members recommend. Thank you.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
any hardware or "agro" store in Galicia carries a full range. The "cabbages" you saw are called "Berzas," and are usually bought as already-started plant seedlings. They need TONS of water, and good rich soil (they wouldn't grow for me on the meseta, alas!), but seeing as you're in Scotland you might be in luck! You can get Padron pepper seeds right there in UK nowadays from Thompson & Morgan.

Thank you Rebekah. Yes, we have tons of water here (it washes away our track on a regular basis) and lots of cows in the surrounding fields, so it might be possible to grow "Berzas" here - thank you for providing the proper name. I am growing Padron peppers right now in our greenhouse but thought that the seeds from Galicia might be a better strain than those offered by T&M and other British seed merchants.

In the market - there's a little shop on a corner. However, although the Padron pepper seeds were great, the grelos (giant cabbage) really didn't work well here in Suffolk, UK.

As Rebekah said the giant cabbage is the Galician berza. Grelos are simply turnip greens. I don´t know if the soil acidity could have something to do with this. The soil in Galicia is very acid.

I think that most farmers in Galicia would give you Berza or Grelo seeds if you asked them for.

Por favor tiene semillas de Berzas/Grelos?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Yes, sorry. I read something that wasn't there!

Thank you everyone for your advice and suggestions. I checked the EU regulations for importing seeds and, as I understand it, I am permitted to bring back to the UK no more than 5 commercially produced packets of seeds.

Hello, so my plans have slightly changed after completing the Coastal Portuguese and Finisterre/Muxia caminos on June 13. I now have 2 extra days in Santiago and was wondering where I should head...
The Santiago pilgrim office issued 3,171 Compostelas today. The second time so far this year when the total has been over 3,000. The first was on Good Friday when 3,193 Compostelas were handed out.
