I am walking in March and April of 2019.
Happy new year to all! I am starting my first Camino walk, on febuary 11 from Pamplona to Santiago, i am so excited. One fellow winter walker contacted me through the forum, and I love knowing I am not the only one out there undertaking a frosty cold walk through Spain. This forum is wonderful, thank you so much!

Twice during winter caminos I have sat out true blizzards; in Villafranca Montes de Oca, February 25, 26, 2006 and FoncebadĂłn, March 5,6, 2009. Even late November 2012 the climb up to O Cebreiro was packed with snow. Luckily open albergues offered welcoming shelter, heat and companionship.

Remember winter is a great time to walk, but you must be PREPARED!

The advice on layering is a biggie. You never dress with the amount of clothing needed to keep you warm at the start of walking or hiking... you wear the amount of clothing needed to keep you warm 10 minutes after you start walking.

In cold weather, or even cool weather, one needs to do what is necessary to prevent overheating and sweat. That includes how fast a pace one is moving at in exerting energy, as well as how much clothing one is wearing, and how much air circulation one is able to maintain.

It does not take long, with any layering amount, to saturate clothing with sweat. THAT is when the danger of hypothermia, and at the very least a chilly discomfort will begin to take its toll. If saturation or wetness happens, the only recourse is to change into dry clothing. Since there is usually a limited amount of clothing carried in a backpack, it is essential to adopt strategies to control sweating. Keep in mind that the material of your layers will also determine the effect to you from the above scenario. Focus on clothing made from merino wool or specialized synthetics. These will allow the garment to remain somewhat insulative even though saturated with sweat. Cottons and cotton blends are a menace and can accelerate a hypothermic condition.

Strategies include those mentioned above:

  • Limit layers of clothing to only those needed when full exertion is going to be achieved. For those who can't suck it up ;) for a few minutes, then wear only layers which can be quickly and easily removed. For instance, adding a poncho will add about a 15 degree F advantage to existing layers. It allows for good air circulation. As you warm up during the first 10 minutes of your walk, the poncho is easily removed and stashed into a side pocket of your pack.
  • Move as slow as you need to, within reason, to keep perspiration to a minimum. This may also mean stopping to allow your body to cool down. Even with a single, lightweight layer, some folks walking under load will tend to over-heat. Keep monitoring yourself.
  • Keep an insulative layer near at hand so that if you are wetting-out while walking, you can put it on quickly when you stop for a break. Keep it in an outside pocket or on top of the other contents in your pack. A light puffy jacket or mid-weight fleece or a down vest works well here. The key is to keep this layer dry and to use it as a last resort when at rest. If this strategy is needed, do not continue walking until you have been able to stop sweating and you can achieve some level of dryness to your clothes.
In the above scenario, you may actually become warmer by removing your saturated layers so that you only have on your dry insulative layer. Dig out a towel and dry off excess sweat as best you can. And even though wool weighs more than other types of insulation, you do not need a heavy cap of wool to keep you warm. Wool is also far more breathable than many materials which aids in heat control.
As with neck wear, a wool cap can be easily removed to assist with cooling the body to prevent overheating.

Much of the above is what I have used when mountain climbing at high altitudes. Patience and light, multiple layers is the key to preventing hypothermia when being active outdoors.

About walking in cold weather. I generally finish my walks on the camino in late November and am used to below freezing mornings (generally I consider them cozy, compared to the weather at home in Calgary at that time of year). When walking with a pack in below freezing morning weather, I dress lightly and move as quickly as I comfortably can. I can generally avoid sweating and the icy discomfort which can follow. But, I have noticed that a pair of warm mitts or gloves is essential for me. Without them, my hands ache and do not stop doing so until the air temperature warms up considerably. They are light to carry and you can stuff them in your pockets when you warm up. Another hint from my cold weather camino walks: I wrap a light scarf around my head and under my chin in the mornings and wear my Tilley hat over top. This keeps me warm with little additional weight and can be removed, retaining the hat, when the air warms up. Buen camino to all who choose to walk in winter. I prefer fall, without the risk of slippery walking surfaces.
 
PLEASE bring proof of health insurance when you walk the camino, no matter where you come from. I took a very sick French pilgrim to the health center the other night. He had only his passport, no EHIC or other proof of insurance, and he was incommunicado. I had a helluva time with the paperwork wrangle. DON`T DO THIS to the people who are trying to help you out!

In EU we have an insurance card. Private insurance document (paper and photo) should be with you if you have that. Finally, insurance can be sorted out AFTER medical help is rendered in case of emergency. After all, insurance is just dealing with money.

Sorry we will be at different ends - if I can get to SJPdP... Hoping to leave from there on 6 or 7 Feb to Burgos as I only have 2 weeks for walking.

Anybody who can advise please? I can't find train/bus from Pamplona or Bayonne/Biarritz to SJPdP on 5 or 6 Feb.

Wow. You will have a great time! I walked into Santiago on Dec 1 after a lot of really bad weather. I wouldn’t change a thing. Except getting bedbugs ( but even they are less with less people and the cold!)
Lots of stuff closed, but there is definitely enough open. I wanted to make a photo collection of all the closed bars and Alburgues!
My walk was SO different from the stories I heard about the summer! It was so uncrowded (but you could definitely find people). Have a super time!
