Hi Brian, as already stated by Wayfarer it is very safe and no problems with refugees. They coming in our direction namely Germany, Holland and further north.

Safer than most of the places a lot of us live ;-) And no, the refugee crisis hasn't affected it, but it is a good idea keeping the refugees in your thoughts during your walk, as pilgrims we are kind of 'voluntary refugees for a time'. Buen Camino, SY

...recently whilst heading south along der Ochsenweg refugees were sleeping in places where pilgrims occassionally rest: Caritas, communal buildings, railway stations. In Itzehoe refugees were also sheltering at the Pilger Herberge. I slept on a floor :).
