Blankets provided in Albergues and/ or Polideportivo.

Starting next week from Bilbao and would love to take just the "liner" not our sleeping bag.
Once or twice a week we will seek a private room in hotel but would love to know if blankets are provided in the out of the way halls etc.
Last year from Le Puy we did not require eeven the liner.

One example recommended to us on the norte was Colombres.
If we do not stay in the private alberque are blankets likely to be provided in the polideportivo or other halls along the way.
What is the position in albergues.

There were no blankets provided at any of the albergues when I walked on the Norte.
You might PM MermaidLillian, who has walked the entire route.

I personally would not walk the Norte without a lightweight sleeping bag or at least a microfiber liner - it is a Marine climate - often foggy, chilly, and wet, even in summer I've heard.

Hi David,

I sent my sleeping bag home after 3 days, i thought my tent would be the thing i needed most, wrong! Some hostels provide blankets after much tutting and staring at you like you are a madman, some dont, they just chuckle to themselves. The norte can get quite cold at night even in July, especially in Asturias and in the interior of Galicia. I would take a liner and maybe wrap up under that if the hostel doesnt provide blankets, i can think of three examples Colombres(sportshall), Aviles and Cadavedeo, possibly more but cant think were.

Oh dear, I wil be in Irun on July 17 after 3 days in Barcelona I will be walking for just over 3 weeks. I was not planning to drag that darned sleeping bag with me just a liner and long underwear for sleeping. Anybody else have experience to share regarding the del Norte weather and temperatures?

I walked on the Norte in July, 2009 from Irun to Oviedo. I brought only a sleeping bag liner. I don't recall ever being cold. I'm not sure if I recall correctly, but I do think some places provided blankets. I would just take a liner...I always got spaces in the albergues and never slept at polideportivos so cannot comment on blankets there.

Am curious what your experience was last year -- was the sleeping bag liner enough? Were there blankets? How cold is it? Should I bring fleece, sweats? Will be hiking first 3 weeks of July, trying to pack as light as possible...

I am currently on the camino, for me a silk liner is enough, mos albergues have blankets on the beds or in the room, if you do not see any, ask for a cama (carma) some places keep them in a store room. July is normally quite warm, the albergues at the higher altitude colder locations almost certainly will have blankets

The only albergue without blankets that I have encountered was the parochial in Leon. They did not even have pillows! A blond Costa Rican woman listened to the rude comments from the operators about the dorm room she was in because they assumed she did not speak Spanish. It was about one room being for men only. There is a real attitude in that place, but the municipal albergue is closed (or is closing), so it is the only low cost place in Leon now. There are a number of good low cost hostales available. Go to one of them (and they give you blankets, towels, and sheets.)

"Manta" is the word for blanket.
We had to find this out: our LAM Spanish "cobija" is unknown in Spain.

I am in Santander, and chucked my sleeping bag in france at a place called Tarnos le Plage. It has been touch and go so far on the norte about needing a sleeping bag, I have been able to rely on blankets, other pilgrims have not been so lucky. I know it gets colder at night in Asturias, but there may be blankets. I think this question is so hard to answer because it depends on the weather and if the albergue you stay in is well stocked. Take a lightweight cheap sleeping bag and if you do not need it then you can do as I did and chuck it and rely on your sleeping liner.
