0430 and dozens of pilgrims were already up. Such a ruckus of shuffle-bumping in the dark, rustles and bustles with far too many plastic bags , great excitement of course. Everyone dying to see Santiago at sunrise or in the early morning light. Lazybones me just crossing Monte Gozo a-n-d Santiago is still lost in the morning mist and fog. There is something mythical/mystical about floating through the clouds after weeks and more of walking so many People had their hearts set on a bright sunny entrance. Will just have to do it all over again!

Soak it up like a sponge,Buen Camino

Congratulations Scruffy1! This spring I arrived at Monte Gozo at last light and saw the sun setting over Santiago - a very different experience to yours. The Pope John Paul II monument was surrounded by 2 coach loads of uniformed pilgrims who were being despatched by their guide to walk the final couple of kilometres to the cathedral. I was (somewhat) tired and emotional after a 40km day and hadn't the heart (or the legs) to accompany them that night and completed the following day. Whether our journey has been long or short Mount Joy lives up to its name. Say one for me to Santiago. Buen Camino!

Well done Scruffy! Unfortunately with the construction of an apartment building the view from the Mount of Joy ( Monte Gozo) is no longer really worth the time (imho) or effort.

I, like Cornelius, found the place overcrowded with bus-pilgrims who were more intent on getting their photos taken in front of the JPII memorial than trying to understand what those of us who had walked or ridden for 700 or KM, who wanted 5 or 10 minutes to reflect on the past 3 or 4 weeks.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

I loved the first sighting of the Cathedral 3 miles away from Monte de Gozo. This was the view at sunrise on 20th June this year....

You cannot see them from the Camino, but where you reach the big monument on the left (photo below), you need to turn off left and head down the path through the field to the back road. Cross the road at the parking area then follow the path up to the statues.DSCF9341er.jpg
