Hola

Greetings from the exhausted staff of the Pilgrims' Office where today we issued a staggering 2709 Compostelas. This number will rise slightly as more data is entered.

This sets new record and is a huge achievement. Thanks to pilgrims for being patient and to the staff and volunteers for remaining cheerful and working so hard.

Until tomorrow!

John

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Wow! So this is the all time record for registering Pilgrims in one day ever? We would have loved to have been there to help you out!

JW, you remind me of the guy in Chicago that voted 100 times, just to set the record for highest votes ever counted in the precinct. Are you sure you didn't just run up and down the stairs registering as a different pilgrim to push the numbers over the top?

Then again, knowing you as I do, this has got to be a satisfying benchmark for all the Pilgrims' Office staff. What you all have done in just the past several years to make each pilgrim's Camino a bit more special...speaks volumes.

God Bless you all.

Arn

Wow !!! We arrived were there at 8:30 and the queue was already growing so we didn't go anywhere else we just joined the queue. Staff were fabulous. It does explain the enormous pressure on beds this week tho ..... Had no idea I'd be contributing to a record breaking day !!! :)

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Hmmm...night shift? Count me in. I would have loved to have been there to help.

My stint as an Amigo in early June was awesome.

Need help in future weeks? You know where to find me. Have passport, will travel...

Best wishes to all...and a hearty "WELL DONE!"

John,
It sounds like Miller time to me! (Miller is a brand of beer in the US, and Miller time means sitting down with friends and enjoying a cool one after a hard day's work or play).
Thanks to the folks at the Pilgrims' office for all their hard work, and I'll always be grateful for the special service provided by you and the Amigos for us.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

how many pilgrims do the st jean/santiago route in a year? for the past few days I have met none!
Starters in SJPP, this year from January to end of July, were 15'087 (SJPP-Roncesvalles-Pamplona: 21'706)
Last year, during the same period, there were 13'929; and in 2012 11'081 (SJPP-Roncesvalles-Pamplona during 2013: 20'640; during 2012 17'799)
Pilgrims who had started from SJPP between January to December in 2013 were 25'557 (+ 15%); in 2012 22'214
During August last year (2013) arrivals in Santiago who had started in SJPP were considerably less than in any other month from May to October.
Similarly in August 2012, there were also less arrivals who had started in SJPP than during the months of June and October. Note however that in both August 2012 and August 2013 there were remarkably more starters from Roncesvalles instead.
We'll see by the end of August how many pilgrims had started from SJPP (and Roncesvalles and Pamplona)
So far this month the pilgrims' office in Santiago is registering record daily arrivals. :)

Word of the Camino's is spreading every year. I have not met anyone who had anything bad to say about the Camino. Complains of blisters and sore muscles yes bit that's all. People of all ages can walk at least one of the Camino's and it is the best way to really see a country and meet the people as well as people from all over the world. I fear that the day is coming when there will be more pilgrims than beds or food to feed them.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Oh, they are coming all right. Johnnie Walker reports on the stats from the Pilgrim Office so he has the official numbers. However, several months ago, I saw estimates on the forum of 230,000 pilgrims for calendar 2014. I wonder where we are just now?

Clearly, if the annual volume does hit that level and beyond, the carrying capacity of the Camino, especially the Frances, will be reached, and at some times of the year exceeded. Even though the volume is spread across the months in a near-bell curve distribution, the current anecdotal stories about bed races and "completo" signs at 13:00 will likely become established facts.

Just in my limited experience of doing two Camino Frances in consecutive years at the same time (May 2013 and May 2014), I had a significantly more difficult time finding affordable, non-albergue accommodation in 2014 than I did in 2013. To this end, I could see clear evidence of two types of groups becoming more pervasive along the Camino Frances.

The first group is comprised of organized tour groups with pre-arranged lodging reservations and mochila transport. I am not offering any criticism of this manner of doing the Camino, I merely point it out as it represents a factor in the higher overall pilgrim numbers. Commercialism will creep in. That is the way of the world.

The second group are university students walking some or all of the Camino as part of their university studies and their adult / teacher chaperones / guides. Many, but not all of these groups appeared to be from the U.S. However, I am certain there were other nations represented as well. Again, I am not being critical. I am just reporting the facts as I saw them, first-hand.

All of these groups will compete for finite housing and eating facilities along the Camino Frances. Local politics and economic factors will combine to keep the number of new hostals and albergues to a minimum, especially in smaller towns and villages. Individually, the tour and student groups are not large, perhaps 8 - 15 people. But, if there are even half a dozen such groups all headed in the same direction at the same time they saturate the facilities in each town they come to...sort of the "pig in the python" metaphor.

Having established that at least the Camino Frances is becoming more popular than ever, one does wonder what the contingency plans are for handling 275-300,000 or more pilgrims per year, both at Santiago de Compostela and along the way getting there? It can happen.

Just thinkin out loud...

Well done and good job!
If the office is open from 9 to 21 then...
thats 225 an hour
and about 3.7 a min.
which would mean that if this was normal each day of the year
then 988.785 pilgrims would arrive at Santiago.
Oh well.. who knows what the future hold :)

2079 pilgrims is equivalent to ~6000 to 8000 bed-nights for the final stage between Palas de Rei and Santiago (actual albergue bed count is about 2000). This situation looks hopeless for weary travellers trying to finish their Camino. Is there any sign that the numbers are declining ?

wow thanks for the effort in getting those stats

On behalf of all those footsore pilgrims, thank you so much for the work that you do which is a wonderful culmination to the pilgrimage. My Compostela is hanging on my bedroom wall and is much treasured!

This scenario happened already during 2010, when 272'000 pilgrims registered at the Pilgrims' Office in Santiago. Of these, nearly 70% had walked the Camino Francés when just over 1/3rd of them declared to have started in Sarria.
If the overall large numbers registered so far this year keep on "speed", it is likely that they will meet those of the Holy Year 2010. The facilities along the last legs of the Camino are being strained, but of course we should not forget that during July and August many school and business holidays take place in Europe. It'll all cool down soon.
In the mean time, no respite for the AMIGOS as yet, who are doing a wonderful job!
Felicitaciones y ánimo!:)

Crikey !!!

And a friend who has been volunteering at the SJPP Pilgrim office tells me people are still pouring through there at a rate of 300/day

I'm currently on the Camino Aragónes, and generally from Lourdes down to here I've seen about a half dozen Pilgrims a day. Puente la Reina is liable to be somewhat the shock when I get there LOL

And I REALLY DO hope that this amazing news will finally put an end to people writing in here about how Pilgrims "don't need" to pack a sleeping bag ...

Another record has also just been broken ...

This last week, the numbers passing at the Pilgrims Office in SJPP reached 2350 !!!

If things carry on this way, the numbers might surpass the 13th Century levels of half a million Pilgrims a year !!!

Such numbers as these were unthinkable 20 years ago, and I am completely amazed by these developments

Well "N", everybody who has a business interest along The Way is quite happy on such development. And best of all, there will be no 13th Century bandits attacking pilgrims along certain infamous stretches of those days.;)

Hello, What time does the office close in Santiago today? The website lists different times in different places.
The Santiago pilgrim office issued 3,171 Compostelas today. The second time so far this year when the total has been over 3,000. The first was on Good Friday when 3,193 Compostelas were handed out.
