Planning a first Camino walk

Sep-Oct-2013 Camino Frances (Bordeaux to Santiago)
Hi

I am a 65 year old Irish-Canadian (Foxford, Co Mayo, now Ottawa) and hope to walk the Camino sometime in 2013 as a first retirement project. I am just starting the planning and am a little overwhelmed by the amount of information available on-line. My introduction to the Camino was Robert Sibley's series of articles in the Ottawa Citizen around 2000. Those articles left me with the ambition to one day start the journey to Santiago.

Hi Desmond,

Welcome to the forum. Yep there is a lot of information out there and on this forum. You have plenty of time to take a good look around and when you are ready to ask questions or confirm things, just ask away. Plenty of people eager to help.

Good luck with your planning and Buen Camino for 2013. Your journey has already begun.....

Regards
Mig

You will read repeatedly in this Forum that you should take care of your feet, and take it easy. Find the threads that address those issues, and you will know most of what you need to know to be successful. Many other tips will add to your enjoyment, so read them too. But footwear that works with you, and not doing too much too early are the two basics.

Buen camino.

Desmond, there are two planning books you could have a look at to help you plan your Camino. Planning your Camino is by a fellow Canadian, Beverely Robson and the other is Your Camino which I had published in August.
You'll find them both on Amazon.com

Don't get too overwhelmed. Get good boots, good socks and a good backpack. Make sure all your clothes will dry quickly. Read about history, Romanesque architecture and Catholic art. Now, start walking. We could have managed happily on the map and Albergue list they gave us in SJPP. There are many wonderful people on the way and you need never be alone. You will find that many pilgrims take things day by day. Enjoy it, it is remarkable.
