Rucsacs in SDC Cathedral + new hostel

This may have been mentioned before.....

Rucsacs are no longer allowed in the cathedral. But a few metres to the right of the Pilg Office door is a consigna; 2 euros a day. They X ray your sac so don't leave your pet mouse inside. Bedbugs watch out! (but they say these beasts are tough!)

Shopping bags are also banned, and small daysacs.

There's a new private hostel/bunkhouse in SDC - 6euros. If I can find the leaflet I'll give its name. But you'll find it anyway. 150 beds I think.

Yes - but we are hoping that in 30 days time when the Holy Door is closed again that all will return to "normal" in the Cathedral and pilgrims can arrive with their rucksacks in the time honoured fashion. Vamos a ver.

I do hope so.....the sight of all the rucsacs and staffs is always a pleasure. I thought this ban was indefinite.

Hola - I think a lot will change very quickly. For example currently there are 4 Pilgrim Masses every day - this will revert to one. The Holy Door will be closed and there will be no queues for that and therefore no need for the "one way" system in the Cathedral. I can't see that a rucksack ban will be necessary after 31 December let alone desirable. Indeed the current left luggage wouldn't be economically sustainable in the quiet months of the year at any rate. We'll soon know.

For me, to arrive at the Praza de Obradoiro, climb up the steps, enter the cathedral, kneel down in front of the altar and give thanks to God for having accompanying me on my long Pilgrimage, still being accompanied by my faithful backpack, means soooo much more than going to deposit it somewhere (be it the left rucsac place or a hostel) and then to return to be able to enter the cathedral. This year, by the time we actually got into the cathedral, all the elation, that magical moment (or name it what you will) had passed. It just wasn't the same. Anne

And sadly another pilgrim tradition bites the dust, along with the ability to "put one's finger in the hole" of the Tree of Jesse. Despite having walked to Santiago 3 times now I have yet to do this and now its banned!

I remember a '70s poster saying "Ban the Bums" ! It's happening :shock:
