Sarria to SdC

Hello pilgrims.

May i ask for your assistance on the following questions as I am to start on my Camino in a few days :

1. Is it necessary that I have a map to follow the route? Unwise to just depend on the road signs ? Where can I get a free map if needed?

2. Someone said its also possible to start in Morgade and still be able to meet the 100km requirement for the certificate, true ?

You can just follow the yellow arrows. Morgade is hard to get to, but is over 100 km.

1. I love maps, especially Brother Brierley's -- but you really don't need one if you're just walking Sarria to SdeC. All you gotta do is follow the yellow arrows -- and the crowds.

1. No map needed. 10,000 yellow arrows and hundreds of walkers make the path obvious, especially in that section. Map is OK if you want to mark your progress, but not something essential.

2. I am not the authority, but I understand Sarria is considered the minimum distance for the Compostella.

It is the largest city for starting, but the requirement is 100km, which is just after Ferreiros (also after Morgade). The old 100km mojone was before Ferreiros, but the Camino "end" changed enough that it was moved a couple of years ago when the new mojones were installed (and now are missing most of their kilometer plaques).

They will question your starting point of Morgade. Make sure you have 2 stamps per day. Sarria is considered to be the last 100kms starting point.

No map needed , just follow the crowd of pilgrims and of course the yellow arrows.

You will qualify for a Compostela starting in Morgade but you need to get your pilgrim passport stamped there. Casa Morgade is apparently a nice place to stay. You don't need a map nor a guide book, you can just follow the arrows but a guide book will give you some background and some idea of what is coming up next and where the facilities are.

Didn’t have a map (finished 4 May, 18) and the only real challenges were in Melide city along N-547 and again curiously from Monte do Grozo to Santiago, where all the new construction seems to have eliminated some of the signs. Even though one of our party has a GPS with the Camino on it, we were fishing in the dark for a kilometer or two. But I think those sections aside, the online guides and the mojone markers are usually more than sufficient.

Congratulations ! And thank you for the reminder. We neither have a map nor a gps, so the points you mentioned will be of big help. We pray the Camino gives us what we need.

One other point to put this in perspective, I am a very early riser and usually try to tiptoe out of the alberges about 6am or so with my gear all packed up the night before, making a very minimum of fuss and noise. I also walk relatively fast, about 5kms/hr or so. That means there are relatively fewer peregrinos ahead of me. If you wait until a respectable hour of 7-8am to start, and walk like a reasonable human being, all you will need to do is follow the trail of bodies in front of you. Sarria - Santiago is quite well traveled in the middle of the day. Buen Camino!

Greetings! My map says that a Morgade start will get you the Compastella, with a few k to spare. It will no doubt be easier to get to Sarria, which is about 11k before. There are a few good websites with maps, information, and albergues. Otherwise the Brierley guidebook or mapbook will be supremely helpful. Buen Camino!
