Wise Pilgrim app

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
Has anyone used the Wise Pilgrim app? I doing the Camino Portugues at the end of September and wondering if this app could be helpful for booking accommodation and maps? Any other helpful application/tips welcome too. Thanks
It’s a good app and well worth the trivial cost.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-
Yea, it is very helpful. I used it for the Portuguese in April. It was nice to check the map to make sure I was on the correct course if I hadn’t seen an arrow for a bit. It also helped me gauge where I was in relation to the next town/cafe! I love that the maps work offline. I would open the app each morning on Wi-Fi just to refresh the map. I don’t think I needed to do this but there was one time I didn’t and was unable to bring up the map for a short period of time. I definitely recommend paying for the full version, it’s only $4.99. It was also helpful for wayfinding once I was in a town as most albergues are marked on the app. I would definitely use again for another Camino if more versions become available!

I installed the Wise Pilgrim again and noticed it doesn't include the Litoral route which I may be on in early October. it's fine, I know my way pretty well here.

Bringing a friend on his first Camino, I noticed the Camino Ninja is available for iPhone, not too sure what the new owners have planned. I installed it with .apk file when I got a new phone before it was available. I get and error now at the google play store, looks like the same version so far.

for just maps, I installed Organic Maps and found GPS tracks here:
https://www.santiago.nl/downloads/

The Buen Camino app has never been able to download the offline maps for me completely, just gets stuck.

CaminoTool requires a login with Google, Installed and looking it over.

the end of Sept or very early Oct is a great time to walk! Buen Camino

The Wise pilgrim app was very helpful for my caminos- Frances from SJPP in 2022 and Portuguese from Porto in 2023. Michael, the developer, updates and improves the app frequently/continually. I found it well worth the small cost for the paid version but the free version is good, too.
@lovelyshell aka Marisa, who commented above, was a more interactive helper and friendly advisor on the Portuguese. She generously gave me tips as she traveled a day or so ahead of me 😊. If you get a chance, it’s nice to connect with other forum members. We even met up in SdC.

I use both the Wise Pilgrim app and the Buen Camino app along with the Gronze.com website.
A feature on Wise Pilgrim that I really liked and used quite a bit is the WhatsApp helper. You can send a WhatsApp message to albergues right from the app, and the message is translated into Spanish for you.

The version of Wise Pilgrim I have includes the Litoral Route. I haven't checked it in detail, but there is a track and lists of accommodation at the towns at least for the first day.

I have several camino apps loaded, and a couple of general purpose mapping apps. Wise Pilgrim got the nod this year as my preferred specialist app when I needed one. The Gronze app is also worth having if you have an Android phone, otherwise the Gronze website is readily available as well.

I used the Wise Pilgrim app with the map downloaded. I wondered off the track in the dark several time. It came in very handy in some of the towns as well. I used it on the Primitivo. and I am sure it will be a wonder on the Portuguese.

Used Wise Pilgrim app on my Portuguese Coastal ,Littoral and Espiritual Variant!
Great app easy to follow simple layout with lots of info!

Using Michael's Camino Frances app from Leon next week .

Mine does. Isn’t it the blue and mixed with the red?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Used Wise Pilgrim app on the Camino Portuguese Litoral/Coastal route this past May and found it to be superb. Especially found the real time trail map and location to be very helpful in areas where the signage was a little skimpy. Would highly recommend.

To be on the safe side, I would download the app before you leave home. I tried to use it in Spain this year, for the VdlP and it wouldn't let me. It wanted me to make a payment, although a French lady I met wasn't asked to make one and when I tried, it wouldn't let me.
I contacted the owner of the site and he sent me some instructions on how to get around this but they didn't work so I had to use two other apps, which were as bad as each other.
I've just decided this morning that I'm going to do the Portuguese, around the same time as you and your post has reminded me to sort out the app before I head off.
Hope to see you along the way.

I'm glad I did sort it out before I left, It seems to be a problem between Google Pay, the app and my phone but you'll probably be okay as you don't have my awkward phone. I had to download it then pay for the full version via my laptop as Google Pay won't recognise my password on my phone, yet it recognises it on my laptop.
Now I've just got to remember how to find the maps of the route, it's not at all clear.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

I highly recommend it. The price is insignificant, compared to the whealth of useful info and options/possibilities. Make sure you download offline maps before leaving home so you won't need wifi in Spain/Portugal.

How do I find the maps? I've looked but I can't find more than the information re the CP.

I am a computer SW engineer, with 50 years experience on my back, much of it focusing on user friendliness from computers. (not always easy, but we do our best...). The Wise Pilgrim's apps are exemplatory in user friendliness, helpfullness, and content/map info/booking, sites info, recommendations, and much more. I can walk more or less on autopilot on Spainish Caminos wtih them.

But first you need to download the maps.

I wrote instructions for them in this post: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/com...amino-apps-for-offline-use.82640/post-1174778
Thank you very much, I've just found out how to download the map and now the little compass icon works. It all looks very comprehensive to me.

Well, I remember first meeting Wise Pilgrim in the albergue in Negreira, at least 15 years ago. I remember thinking at the time — Come on kid (he was VERY young), how can you claim to be wise at such a young age? After all these years, I think he has convinced me. And of course he is 15 years older now, so presumably even wiser than when he started!

I use several resources on my walks, but I always have Wise and Gronze as my informational back-ups. What I specifically liked about using the Wise app along the route between Lisbon and Porto is that he included some off-route recommendations for walking -- sometimes on safer backroads away from the busy roadways that are the marked Caminos, sometimes optional routes in/out of town to see unique cultural locations not on other apps. He offers an injection of "common sense" that I appreciate. And the ability to use WhatsApp to contact accommodations from the app is invaluable. Plus the off-line maps.

The Wise Pilgrim app is quite good. A note to users: I believe the way these apps remain free or cheap is they get a small cut when you book reservations through them. So if you want to help the app developers, go directly in their app to bookings rather than "being independent" and using the booking.com app or calling directly to a lodging.

I walked the CP this summer and we used the wise pilgrim to make sure we were on trail from time to time we also used it from time to time to look for accommodation. Perhaps it was on a setting or something we did wrong but it never seemed to show Albergues just hostels or better represented by booking.***. Has anyone else noticed this?

No. When you tap on the name of a town there is a link to booking.com that says "reserve a bed in town name", but scroll down. First there will be some information about the town, then a list of accommodations. You tap on the accommodation name, and if there if they are on booking.com there will be a link, but there is also their contact info if you would rather book direct.

Thanks for this. I might have confused the Wise Pilgrim with Buen Camino app. I'll have to try and learn it.

I loved the app while on the camino but im also using it atm to plan my next one due to the ease of zeroing the km at any location to see how many km to the next overnight location.

This was great information, I am going to download the app. Planning my first Camino (France from SJPP in Oct/Nov.)

Hello, I have an Android phone. I have installed the Wise Pilgrim - Portuguese. I can run the app from the Play Store app but I cannot add it to my home screen. Is this how you run the app?

Thank you

No. That sounds a little strange to me. I have it added to a group on the home screen.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.
