Ever wonder who paints all those ubiquitous yellow arrows? All photographic evidence to the contrary, it isn't me.

Despite my shameless self promotion in this regard, here is a picture of the gentleman who generously gives his time so that the rest of us may find our way.

I asked him why he did it. His answer was that he received a sign. To this day, I'm not sure if he was putting me on.IMG_3782-2.jpegIMG_3781.jpeg

The yellow arrows of course were the brainchild of the great Elías Valiña, parish priest of O Cebreiro, the man who more than any other can be credited with the revival of the Camino Francés in modern times. A story is told of him painting the arrows near the French border back in the early 1980s and he was accosted by two policemen who asked him what he was doing; "preparing for a French invasion!" was his response. We all of us owe him and the good people who continue the work of maintaining the arrows a great debt of gratitude.
