Kitchens?

We are returning this year for our next section of the camino! At this rate we will need another 3 years to finish it....We are on a very tight budget this year and to save money we are planning to make most of our suppers. How equipped are the kitchens at the albergues/hostals (that actually have kitchens)? Do we need to carry a plate and mug with us for example?

Kitchens are poorly equipped. Take what you will need unless you want to rely on being lucky enough to find the kitchens that have even pots and pans. Cleanliness is also up to chance, so if you take your own cookware and dishes, you will be able to control that as well. Galicia is particularly bad for kitchen maintenance.

http://www.gronze.com/ is the reliable site to provide information on kitchens but, as @falcon269 says, the existence of a kitchen does not guarantee pots, pans or even a functional cooker. That said outside of Galicia you are likely to encounter at least some equipment. The Junta Albergues in Galicia have a reputation for beautifully fitted kitchens devoid of even a single chipped mug or a plug on the micro-wave.

Bring, or buy, a sharp knife and plan on "one-pot" meals and you should survive if not thrive .

I only cooked a few times: the Municipal in Villafranca del Bierzo, St Nicholas de Flue in Ponferrada spring to mind. @Kiwi-family have cooked their way along the Caminos and might be able to assist with some specific locations of serviceable kitchens.

It's about the size and weight of one of those food thermos flasks. The small lightweight ones.....

Mine is a different brand, but similar size.

As said above Xunta albergues in Galicia are really very poorly or mostly not equiped at all. Privat and some municipal albergues does have some cutlery and pots but usually I bring a lightweight fork and spoon (+ swiss army knife) with me. Plastic cutlery will do also. I carry cheese, chorizo, maybe a tomato etc. in "tupperware-like" container which can be also used in microwave ovens which are likely to be found in kitchens. Problems solved
