300 pilgrims in a month

Sorry to bombard you with Spanish newspaper articles, but there have been several articles this month from La Voz in Santiago.This one says that since the new Pilgrim office opened midSeptember in Montefort that they saw about 300 pilgrims walking the Invierno. Of those 75% were Spaniards.

The same article says 185 got a Compostella in September and of course not everyone collects a Compostella and not everyone stops in Montfort as it is a new office. The trend seems to show the Invierno is gaining in popularity though.

I had two reactions when I saw this.

1. Many of those who love the Invierno as a solitary, peaceful route will not be happy to see the numbers starting to shoot up.

2. Many of those who were reluctant to walk the Invierno because it is a solitary route will be happy to see the numers starting to shoot up.

I don’t think the Invierno is going to become overcrowded in any meaningful sense of the word for years.

I think now could be the sweet spot when the facilities are increasing but the word hasn’t spread too far. It is a glorious route, so if you are tired of the crowds when you get to Ponferrada, go for it!

There was another article in the same paper today about the length of stages on the Camino (specifically mentioning the Invierno, but for any Camino) and the advice that a stage should be based the pilgrim's physical ability, the availability of time the pilgrim has to walk, and the availability of beds. They mention the Gronze.com and other guides that give the false impression that a pilgrim should walk the distance in that etapa (stage).
