So I am hoping that there are some tech saavy people out there who can help me with my question...

I am flying out of Santiago first thing Monday morning on Ryanair. Today I got an email from them about checking in online so as to avoid paying them 50E (please!) if I check in at the airport. Part of the process involves printing out my boarding pass. The only tech device that I have with me is a smartphone. How do I go about getting the downloaded boarding pass into printed form? If you're into technology this is probably an unbelievably dumb question, but oh well.

Your phone's digital image of your boarding pass needs to be printed as a paper copy.

When you are in SdC go to the Pilgrim House at 19 rua Nova. Their helpful staff can help you print a paper copy of your boarding pass. Also plan to chat a bit over a coffee. See more about their many activities here in their web.

Ryanair have an app for smartphones which allows you to check-in and download a virtual boarding pass which is stored on the phone. You can then show the downloaded pass on your phone at security and the boarding gate. There are a few airports where this is not accepted but is possible in Santiago. No need for a printed version though I do like to have one when possible.

San Martin Pinario also can print a boarding pass, as can Hostal La Salle.

Thank you all so much. It looks like I will probably have to use @Bradypus's method. I am currently walking the Camino Ingles and I noticed that Pilgrim House is not open on Sunday which is when I will be back in Santiago.

Just looked again at the Ryanair website. Seems that mobile boarding passes are only available for EU/EEA citizens. I'm a Brit so it worked for me before but probably best for @intrepidtraveler to find somewhere to print out her boarding pass after all

Where are you staying in Santiago @intrepidtraveler ? I don't have a printer (yet), so I can't help you, but I would suggest that you try if the place you stay at has one. Or ask kindly at the hotel San Martin Pineiro, they have 24/7 hour reception and a printer and speak English. They might charge you a small fee.

In general it works like this:

Forward the email you got (with the boarding pass attached) to the person that has access to a printer.
They print out the attachment and you are good to go/fly.

The Parador in Santiago will print for you also. Don't be intimidated by the fact it's THE PARADOR. Their remit ultimately is to support pilgrims. Like above, make sure to have the PDF ready to email to them.

Last time I flew with Vueling airlines got the boarding carts by mail .
No printing just show the mail with the boarding cart.

This is my first time flying Ryanair and to me they seem to take the nickel-and-dime you approach to a whole new level. Vamos a ver....

Anyway, mission accomplished. Per SYates suggestion I went to San Martin Pineiro where they have a pay-as-you-go computer station set up complete with printer.

You have identified the root of the issue. The fee for printing boarding passes has everything to do with generating revenue, and nothing else.

The more work the airline, any airline, can push down to the traveler, the more money, and profits they can realize. This is NOT limited to Ryanair.

As is usually the case, only the non-tech savvy. and folks who do not read the fine print are penalized. Y'all gotta pay attention.

I am all for making those who don't bother with the fineprint pay more so others can fly for little next to nothing, but one has to admit that depending on the type of travel one is doing, access to a printer before getting to the airport, after you are emailed your boarding pass, can be a challenge. Perhaps airports could have printing stations. But airlines would not be happy.

I disagree with ALL supplemental airline service fees...PERIOD! I too, pay for seat assignments, early boarding, and on some bargain airlines I have paid to carry-on luggage, not just a bag checking fee. But, as others have suggested there are several ways to print your boarding pass before you arrive at the airport.

In my experience, the easiest is to try to do it at the hotel you stay in at Santiago. Failing that, then the Hotel Parador, San Martin Pinario, or Pilgrim House on Rua Nova are the short list of easy-peasy places to obtain access to a printer.

If you are tech-savvy, you will know how to get this done.

There are a number of albergues along the way with printing facilities. In the past, I used an internet cafe in Santiago and an albergue in Melide. An albergue in Triacastela had facilities to book a flight but did not have Adobe Reader installed which was needed for the pop up screen to display and print the pass. I have also heard that you can get a print out in the Parador but dont know if thats true

You can print at the Parador. Go beyond the front desk, down the corridor past the shops, until you come to the lounge. There's a computer with a printer you can use free of charge. Of course, it's for registered guests, but if you look like you belong you can likely use it for printing a boarding pass and for a few minutes.

Now let's not all run to the Parador to print boarding passes and use the computer or the staff will lock it down and this privilege will disappear due to abuse.
