Church at Eunate

Time of past OR future Camino
Camino Frances September 2022
I received the new 2023 Wise Pilgrim Book for the Camino Frances -purchased from the Forum Store. We are planning a late Fall Camino starting October 17 from Pamplona to Burgos. I saw in the WP Book that the Church at Eunate Summer Hours were from March 24-October 14. Is the church open after October 14? I would like to make the detour to see it. Thank you.

You don’t have to make much of a detour to see it but when I walked the Camino in October 2016 it was closed

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

The opening of the Church of Santa María de Eunate so that it can be visited over several months, as well as maintaining its environment and the expenses of all kinds that the opening causes, requires a great effort on the part of the Muruzábal Parish – let us remember that the Villa has less than 300 inhabitants- as well as the small group of volunteers who selflessly collaborates in its conservation, maintenance and care. It should be noted that, for its maintenance, the monument does not receive any subsidy or financial aid from any entity or official body. For this reason, as of May 2017, it was decided to ask visitors for a small contribution: the ticket that they must collect to access the Church. .Most of the proceeds from the sale of tickets are used to cover the payment of the staff that attends to all the visitors. The rest of the collection is dedicated entirely to the maintenance, care of the Church, improvement of the environment, the facilities and the services that are offered to all the people who visit this beautiful monument. In this way we are helping to preserve heritage for future generations.

FREE ACCESS AND VISIT (WITHOUT GUIDED TOUR)

• Individual ticket: €2.00
• Reduced ticket: €1.50 (pilgrims with ID, over 65 years of age, minors between 6 and 13 years of age and groups of 20 people or more) • Minors up

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
The church was to be closed from 1 pm to 5:30 so there was no point in taking the detour past the church but we really wanted to see it and the idea of walking there and back from town after a very hot 33-degree day wasn't appealing, so after a shower, we, and 2 others, caught a taxi there. It is such a stunning place to visit, even if you just get to see the outside. If you want to know what the inside is like (if it is closed) then it has a twin in Torres Del Rio (on the way to Viana), the Iglesia de Santo Sepulcro. You can get the church guardian to open it for you as we did. It isn't as pretty on the outside but almost identical on the inside

When I stayed at the albergue El Jardín de Muruzábal in May 2017, the hospitalera informed us that the church of Eunate would be open that afternoon (It seemed they didn't have fixed opening hours then). So, after our showers, two of us walked there through the fields, a walk of maybe 30 minutes. The church is very special and beautiful in its rural setting. After our visit, a friendly young Spaniard gave us a ride back to the village which we happily accepted.
You won't regret going a few extra km (or taking a taxi) to see Eunate, even if it is closed that day. It is still very much worth a visit.
