albergue life

  1. K

Now there's a compelling subject line. I've done a couple summer Caminos and liked the convenience of having my clothes dry in a couple hours or hanging them off the pack like it's a traveling shop. I'm considering a March VDLP and was wondering if any of you had any tips for laundry and...

The electric coil changed my life on the Camino!

My Camino packing list has been basically unchanged for the last decade. But this year, after reading the words of wisdom of iconic posters like sil, mspath, and anniesantiago, I decided to buy an immersible electric coil (plus plug adaptor) and a tin cup to bring on the Camino. I also brought...

    The daily routine

OK guys, I know this has been discussed ad infinitum already, but for the sake of the newbies, it might repay another thread. And I'd be interested to hear other's comments, as I'm sure I will... :) So, the daily round on camino - or mine, rather... Awake at ?5am, to the sound of the early bag...

Do albergues have lockers or is theft not a problem?

Read that one albergue has lockers. Do any others? Concerned about losing new shoes, clothes, pack - everything. I know to always carry my passport, money and cards but when you get to an albergue, shower and then go out to explore the town - how safe are your belongings left in the albergue?

    CPAP on the Camino

I'm planning to walk beginning in August this year. I use a CPAP machine at night and have discovered the Transcend II which weighs less than a pound. Also available are a solar charger and a chargeable battery. Has anyone had experience with this? Thanks for your help!

How to keep valuables safe whilst sleeping?

Hi, I am doing the Camino in April this year, and will unfortunately have to bring my tablet with me. I'm a heavy sleeper, and am wondering what the best way to secure it whilst sleeping in albergues would be?

Albergue or Hostel? Which are better & cheaper

Here are a few questions I have been thinking about. Alberque or Hostel. What is the difference and which are better and/or cheaper? I know this is supposed to be a humbling experiance and all, but some basic nessesaties are important (Bathroom / Shower). So what exactly are the differences...

    users of cpap machines

Hi there. I am planning to walk the El Camino Frances beginning of June. I can't leave home without my cpap. This is gonna require electricity since batteries are way to heavy. Has anyone else traveled with their cpap? Do the albergues offer beds close to electrical outlets or is this wishful...

    Laundry Detergent

Based on what I've been reading, I should bring two sets of clothes on the Camino and wash clothes each night. Do people carry laundry detergent or do you buy enough each day from somewhere? This is probably a stupid question, but I've been wondering about it. Thanks.

Do albergues refuse the pilgrims who don't carry their packs

I have read in some blogs that entry to some albergues might be refused if they don't carry their bags and use a "vehicle support service" such as a taxi to bring backsacks. My girlfriends and I are going to do the Camino next spring for a friend's 50th birthday and we are split about how to go...

Most effective way to wash clothes

Good day to you all, This forum has been a true resource of information for me. I appreciate all the questions and answers. Although I've seen a bit of traffic on this question, I'd like to ask you all what turned out to be the best method you used to wash your clothes on the way. Do you have...

helo! I've got a question about doing laundry. Did you carried any washing powder from home? Or there was some powder "for general use" in albergues? Or maybe you used something else for doing laundry? :)

    Albergue Etiquette

We're newbies, starting next September from Oporto. Could someone outline what are the "dos" and "don'ts" of staying at an albergue? Chris

    diabetes and the walk again

Thanks for the replies about freezers. I read on one of the links in a reply that a thermos in a fridge over night is adequate for insulin storage, so no need for freezer. So you think access to a fridge will not be a problem? I was wondering whether there is an official website that would...

We may be walking with a friend who is an insulin depentent diabetic. Are there facilities in the refuges to freeze an ice brick every night to keep the insulin cool for the trek a month out of Santiago?
